COMMUNITY YOUTH DRAMA CLUB ANNOUNCES AUDITIONS FOR CONNECTICUT PREMIERE OF "SONG-AND-DANCE KIDS"
The newly-formed In the Hills Community Drama Club will hold auditions for Song-and-Dance Kids by Chip Deffaa on Friday, May 3rd and Saturday, May 4, 2013 at the Thomaston Opera House, 158 Main Street, Thomaston, CT.
Auditions will be scheduled beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Friday and 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The production will be rehearsed and performed at the historic Thomaston Opera House in Thomaston, Conn. on September 13 and 14, 2013.
Auditions are open to children between the ages of 11 and 19. No prepared monologue is required, but those auditioning should prepare a song, preferably from the vaudeville era or from musical theater, to be sung a cappella (without accompaniment). Children auditioning will also be asked to read from the script and sing from the score, and may be asked to learn a simple dance sequence. To schedule an audition, email [email protected]. There is no cost to audition, but those cast will be asked to pay a participation fee of $115 plus a $10 materials fee. Children age 12 and up may also contact the drama club with interest in stage crew and technical positions.
Inspired by the real life story of vaudeville performer Eddie Foy and his children, the Seven Little Foys, Song-and-Dance Kids is an exuberant, full-length musical comedy with lots of heart, lots of humor, and roles for many actors. In addition to Eddie Foy, cameo roles include Harry Houdini, Marie Dressler, Irving Berlin, President Woodrow Wilson, and Mae West. The real stars of the musical though are the seven rambunctious song-and-dance kids of the Foy family who performed with their widowed father and unexpectedly became the most successful family act of their day. As the family tours America, entertaining audiences from Thomaston, Connecticut, to Los Angeles, California, they also learn also what is truly important in life.
The score of Song-and-Dance Kids includes some of the most enduringly popular songs of all time, including "Alexander's Ragtime Band," "Till We Meet Again," "Aba Daba Honeymoon," and "In the Good Old Summer Time." Playwright and composer Chip Deffaa has arranged these timeless songs—written by the likes of Irving Berlin, George M. Cohan, Richard Whiting, William Jerome and Jean Schwartz—and has added some originals of his own. The production will be directed by Rae Johnson, with musical direction by David Junko.
